Multispecies probiotic and psoriatic arthritis

A 12-week randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial included 66 adults with psoriatic arthritis receiving a multispecies probiotic or placebo. Treatment response occurred in 43% of the probiotic group and 65% of the placebo group (odds ratio zero point four; 95% CI 0.13–1.18; p = 0.167). The primary result did not show a statistically supported benefit. Secondary clinical, permeability, immune-cell and stool-microbiome outcomes also showed no between-group differences. The abstract did not report the probiotic dose or strain identifiers. No serious adverse events related to the study product were reported.

INTERPRETATION BOUNDARY

Data from human participants do not by themselves establish applicability beyond the population and outcomes studied. The confidence interval was wide and included both no effect and potentially meaningful effects; the abstract did not report the probiotic dose or strain identifiers.
