Live microorganism-based interventions and healthy aging

A systematic review and meta-analysis included 24 trials, all randomized and placebo-controlled, involving 1,809 aging adults; 11 studies contributed to at least one meta-analysis.

Probiotic or synbiotic interventions had a positive pooled estimate for Mini-Mental State Examination scores (SMD 1.02; 95% CI 0.36–1.68; I² = 90.84%). The pooled Repeatable Battery result was not statistically significant (SMD 0.46; 95% CI −0.50 to 1.41). Handgrip strength had a positive estimate (SMD 0.46; 95% CI 0.06–0.85), but it became non-significant after excluding one study (SMD 0.23; 95% CI −0.27 to 0.73).

No eligible fecal microbiota transplantation trial was identified.
